The dog (Canis lupus familiaris) is a domesticated form of the gray wolf, a member of the Canidae family of the order Carnivora. The term is used for both feral and pet varieties. The domestic dog has been one of the most widely kept working, hunting and companion animals in human history. The word "dog" may also mean the male of a canine species, as opposed to the word "bitch" for the female of the species. The dog quickly became ubiquitous across world cultures, and was extremely valuable to early human settlements. For instance, it is believed that the successful emigration across the Bering Strait might not have been possible without sled dogs. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, protection, assisting police and military, companionship, and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. This versatility, more than almost any other known animal, has given them the nickname "Man's best friend" in the western world. Currently, there are estimated to be 400 million dogs in the world. Over the 15,000 year span that the dog had been domesticated, it diverged into only a handful of landraces, groups of similar animals whose morphology and behavior have been shaped by environmental factors and functional roles. As the modern understanding of genetics developed, humans began to intentionally breed dogs for a wide range of specific traits. Through this process, the dog has developed into hundreds of varied breeds, and shows more behavioral and morphological variation than any other land mammal. For example, height measured to the withers ranges from a few inches in the Chihuahua to a few feet in the Irish Wolfhound; color varies from white through grays (usually called "blue'") to black, and browns from light (tan) to dark ("red" or "chocolate") in a wide variation of patterns; coats can be short or long, coarse-haired to wool-like, straight, curly, or smooth. It is common for most breeds to shed this coat. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What kind of young dog do i get while owning an old dog? Q. My dog is 13 years old. She is a golden retriever and she has arthritis in her legs. She is a very kind dog and cannot do too much anymore. I am thinking about getting another dog along with her. What kind of dog should I get who wont bother or pester my dog? A dog that she can get along with. People have suggested a small dog, not another golden because I know that they are rowdy when they are young. Can anyone help? Well, there are certainly certain breeds that are lazier than others, but it sounds like you want to pay more attention to temperament of individual puppies that you may look at. I would say to take your older friend along with you when looking at any puppies to see how they interact. This will probably really help you make a decision about your new friend! If you are going to a shelter or a breeder, ask them about the temperament of each dog...and ask them who is the laziest and who gets along best with other dogs. You meet the puppies first, then when you find one you think you like, bring your old friend along to meet the puppy as well. Your current dog may not mind having a little puppy around. They probably will do all sorts… [cont.] Answered by todavia - Sun Jul 22 23:49:28 2007 How do I teach my dog to be nicer to other dogs? Q. I have an 8-9 year old Chihuahua and every time one of my relatives brings their dogs over, my dog gets feisty and starts barking uncontrollably at the other dog and tries to harm them. We want to get a new dog, but it's impossible to have 2 dogs in the same house under these circumstances. How do I teach my dog to be nicer to other dogs? When you introduce your dog and if he starts barking discipline him by tugging at his leash (have him be wearing one), and use a negative behaviour word like NO or something along those lines. Keep this up and it might take some time because it is a bit late for socializing but I think it will work with time. Good luck! Q. Basically I need a dog that can protect my family and I. Especially if there was a robber that wanted to rob my house. But I also need a dog that is atleast okay around children. I don't care about grooming or anything else. Just protection and family dog. Thanks for all answers. P.S. If there is a dog breed that lives to at least 12 years than that would be superb. A small to medium-size Nordic-type dog, the American Eskimo Dog is known for its bright white coat, jet black points (lips, nose and eye rims) and erect triangular ears. Although once used as a circus dog, they are primarily companion dogs today and participate in conformation, obedience and agility competitions. The breed s white double coat consists of a short, dense undercoat, with longer guard hairs forming an outer coat that stands off from the body.
